19th February: Lyth and Winster Valleys
Another good turnout of eleven members, it was nice see four of local members cycling to the start, one of them was myself. I arrived in the Square at Milnthorpe with 15 minutes to spare, after setting off from Halton just after half past eight, to see Peter Kenner buying his second breakfast at the café/caravan in the square; he had cycle the furthest to get to the start. Soon afterwards Geoff and Lynn arrived, after cycling from Kendal, it was noted that Geoff had no saddlebag on his bike and Lynn was carrying all the weight in her saddlebag again!
After everyone had arrived we headed out of Milnthorpe along Haverflatts Lane and along the lanes through Woodhouse and Hincaster for Low Sizergh Barn Farm for morning coffee, I wonder why our President was first through the door of the tea room, soon discover why the staff were a bit slow on serving us all.
After morning coffee, we headed along the lanes towards Levens, just after passing Heaves Farm; we turn on to Parkend Lane, which followed for about half mile before turning on to our first bridleway, after steep climb we enjoy some good views of the Lyth and Kent Valleys, we continue along the track into Brigsteer, where we enjoyed a freewheel into the Lyth Valley, we then cross over to the other side of the valley via lanes to join the A5074 for short distance before following the lanes through the village of Row to start of our next track, which we follow through Fellside Plantation, at the summit of the track we stop for some lunch along side the track.
After lunch we followed the track down into the Winster Valley, then followed the lanes through the hamlets of Town End, Pool Bank and the Low Woods, before following the bridleway through Knot and Lawns Woods over to Witherslack Hall Farm after short distance of tarmac, we followed our next track down to Beck Head.
Then after about another half mile on tarmac we followed the bridleway from Buckhouse Wood to Raven’s Lodge which well doing for the views. We rejoin the tarmac, headed along the A590 for short distance, at Shampoo Bridge we followed the lanes through to Levens, where Lynn and Geoff left us to head home, the rest of headed along the A6 and then across Milnthorpe Marsh before heading back into Milnthorpe. The end of good ride for some of us but Peter and me still had ride to back to Lancaster.
