October 16th: Furness Fells

After  I pick up Cliff at Warton, we met Don and new member Brian (who join the Fellowship the week before) at the car park on the racecourse at Cartmel. After uploading the bikes out of the cars we headed out through Cartmel village and through the lanes to Cark for morning coffee at the Tea Room at South Lakeland Nurseries.

After putting the world to right, we headed along the B5278 towards Haverthwaite and just before this road crosses the River Leven at GR 345836 we turn on to part of the Cumbria Cycleway which we follow through to Greenodd. After passing through Greenodd village, we joined the A5092 for a short while before turning off this road at Penny Bridge and following the lanes through Bridge End, Spark Bridge and up the Crake Valley to Nibthwaite Grange. Where we joined Bletherbarrow Lane, which we followed up on to fellside, where the lane changes into a white road, has we were on moorland we reward with fine views of  Morecambe Bay, we continue along lane and soon found a lunch spot looking over ford we just cross.

After lunch we continue along the lane to High Ickenthwaite, where we joined Corker Lane for about 500 yards before following another white road to Oxen Park, where joined the tarmac and followed this road through to Colton, where we followed the lane past Greenhead Farm up to the Church where we joined another white road which we followed over to the Old Hall Farm at Bouth. We then follow lanes through Bouth,Causeway End and crossed over the A590. We then followed the B5278 through Haverthwaite and crossed over the River Leven before turning off to head up to High Brow Edge but at GR 348837 we turn on to an bridleway and follow this up to Low Brow Edge. From Low Brow Edge we follow the lane up through High Brow Edge and after about mile reach the summit of our climb out of the Leven Valley. We then enjoy along free wheel via Beckside back to the cars at Cartmel.
