21st May 2006: Greenfields Area
Well it was bound to happen this year, I turn up to start of the ride at Stainforth and come 10.00am no one else had turn up! There plenty were reasons for several members not turning up, like moving house, on holiday with the chairman of the RSF and on holiday in Canada and Alaska.
Anyway I headed out of  Stainforth and cross over the B6479, then followed the lanes through Little Stainforth, then followed them up to Helwith Bridge where I rejoined the B6479, then followed it up to Horton-in-Ribbledale, where join the Horton-in-Ribbledale to Greenfield track, you can ride most of this track, there few sections where I get off push the bike!
As rain which was forecasted had arrived, has I was dropping down into Langstrothdale and has I was myself, I decide I would keep to the tarmac for the rest of the day. So headed down Langstrothdale, then headed along Dubb’s Lane into Buckden, then followed the B6160 through Starbotton and stop for lunch in Kettlewell.
After lunch I carry down Wharfedale, then turn on to Hawkwick Lane and follow it up Littondale to Halton Gill, then followed the road back over to Stainforth.

So while the rest of  had morning coffee, he pay a visit to Halford’s  to buy a new part before joining us for coffee and after morning coffee the expert mechanics in the party so had back on the road.
After crossing over the A6, we  then followed Gillthwaiterigg  Road, then turn on to Garth Row Lane , we followed the lane through Oakbank, and then up to Garth Row (it should be noted that the section of lane between Coppice Howe Farm and Garth Row is nice white lane which best done in the Winter months of the year) where we rejoin the A6 which we followed for about mile before turning on to the road for Bannisdale, which we followed to Plough Farm , where join the first part of old Shap Road which  we followed through  to Bannisdale High Bridge where we rejoin the tarmac for short distance before turning on to another part of  the old road just after Thorn Cottage which followed through to Wolfhowe Plantation  where we rejoin the A6 for another short distance before following  the old road past Hollowgate before dropping down into Borrowdale where we crossed over Borrow Beck via  High Borrow Bridge. Anyway once we got to Bretherdale Head, we followed the lanes down the valley to Greenhomle where short detour to Tebay West Motor Services for afternoon tea.
After our afternoon tea we headed back to Kendal via Greenhomle, we then followed Pikestone Lane through Roundwaite to A685, we then then followed the briddleway up Borrowdale to the A6 and then followed the A6 back into Kendal arriving back at cars just after Seven o’clock . Anyway I was last to arrive and yes I will promise I will be early for start of the next ride, after I got my bike out of back the van, the eight of us headed in Kirkby Stephen for morning coffee, I don’t know what they put in Geoff tea but he was our chief path finder for most of the day and with Nick’s Stomach full (The main reason you  find him trailing at the back is that he’s  not eaten enough or eaten to much, our chairman suffers from the same problem as well!) it was safe to leave the cafe and headed into the hills.
We headed out of Kirkby Stephen........ Click here to read more.

Anyway getting back to the ride, we stop for lunch at the summit of the pass over into Widdale.
After lunch, we followed the track down into Widdale, the stretch of track between High Cross Gate and hardcore forest access track does need some work doing on it soon, as most of the party got off  walk various parts of this section of  track. We turn on to Jubilee Lane, we then headed through Greenlane End, Lupton Mill and Badger Gate before turning on to our next track which we followed up to Newbiggin, the last part of this track the hedges on each side of  the track were over grown which made pushing the bikes a bit difficult in places, which we report to Cumbria County Council Ranger later on in the day, from Newbiggn we followed the Puddlemire Lane down the Lupton Valley to Farleton.
